About Col. Gilbert Potter

During the French and Indian War, Gilbert Potter was a Captain of a Suffolk County Company which was in active service at Ticonderoga. later, in 1776, Lt. Col. Potter was assigned to safeguard Long Island's livestock from the enemy; and during the occupation of Long Island, served in the underground system which kept Gen. George Washington informed of the enemy's activities. He was also attached to the American Hospital Service as he was a physician by profession. Colonel Gilbert Potter died in 1786. He is buried in the Old Burying Hill Cemetery, Hutington, NY. His grave has been marked by our chapter.
